National Co+op Grocers Welcomes New Member and Associate Co-ops
Iowa City, IA — National Co+op Grocers (NCG) — the business services cooperative for retail food co-ops across the United States — today announced the addition of one new member co-op and four new associate co-ops.
The new member co-op, Park Slope Food Co-op, is one of the nation's largest single-store food co-ops and has served the Brooklyn, N.Y., area for more than 40 years. With the addition of Park Slope and the four new associate co-ops, NCG now comprises 148 affiliated co-ops operating more than 200 stores.
"These five co-ops joining NCG reflect the many different stories of retail food co-ops and their communities very well," said Robynn Shrader, Chief Executive Officer, NCG. "From a long-established co-op like Park Slope, to young and thriving co-ops in communities large and small, we are excited to welcome them and work together in growing the cooperative economy."
New Member Co-op
Located in the heart of the Park Slope section of Brooklyn, N.Y., Park Slope Food Co-op has annual sales of over $50 million. Since its founding in 1973, Park Slope has operated in accordance to a unique business model. Today, more than 16,000 members are required to work approximately three hours per month, per adult, in order to be eligible to shop at the co-op, setting it apart from nearly all other retail food cooperatives that do not have a work requirement for owners.
New Associate Co-ops
Dill Pickle Food Co-op opened in Chicago in December of 2009, and in its first year of operation achieved annual sales that were more than double the projections for the co-op's fifth year in business. After consecutive years of double-digit growth, sales are now nearing $2 million; membership has grown to over 1,500; and the co-op just signed a lease to relocate to a larger location.
East Aurora Cooperative Market is a start-up co-op located in East Aurora, N.Y. Since its founders began organizing in 2009, the co-op has grown to 1,100 owners. The co-op is currently working with NCG's Development Co+operative to open its first retail location by the end of the year.
Formed in 2002, Fiddleheads Natural Foods Co-op opened its doors in 2008. The co-op is located in an urban, culturally diverse downtown area in New London, Conn. After seven years of growth, the co-op has 1,500 owners and annual sales over $3 million.
Whole Earth Grocery Co-op has been serving the community of River Falls, Wis., since 1973. In anticipation of outgrowing their relatively small space, this $1 million co-op is looking at expansion to better serve its 1,100 owners.
