National Cooperative Bank Ranks NCGA No. 7 in List of 2014 Top Purchasing Co-ops in the Nation

Nov 13, 2014

Today, National Cooperative Grocers Association (NCGA) celebrates its ranking among the 2014 top purchasing co-ops in the U.S. NCGA was ranked number seven, up from number eight the previous year, by revenue that totaled more than $1.2 billion in 2013. The pioneers of natural and organic foods, retail food co-ops are deeply committed to providing high quality, healthy food; supporting local, sustainable agriculture; and strengthening their communities.

“We are honored to be included among the 2014 top purchasing cooperatives,” said Robynn Shrader, chief executive officer for NCGA. “The growth of NCGA and co-ops across the country demonstrates the power that comes from working together to optimize our resources and ultimately offer more value to our customers and owners. We truly are stronger together.”

Although similar to other business models, a cooperative has several unique features.  Co-ops are owned and governed by consumer owners and rooted in principles like community, voluntary and open membership, economic participation and cooperation, and concern for community.  Local communities benefit both socially and fiscally by the cooperatives’ ability to access and deliver goods and services from across the nation.

In addition to the top 10 purchasing co-ops, the National Cooperative Bank (NCB) also determines the top 100 cooperatives across the nation. This list highlights their business activity and economic power. It’s the only report of its kind to track the profits and successes of cooperative businesses in the U.S.  Collectively the top 100 co-ops generated $234.5 billion in revenue for 2013, an increase of 3.6 percent from 2012.

NCB financially supports the growth and expansion of cooperative businesses, while also deploying hundreds of millions of dollars to support underserved communities and cooperative expansion initiatives.  The full list of NCB’s Co-op 100 report is available at
