National Cooperative Grocers Association (NCGA), a business services cooperative serving 118 consumer-owned food co-ops nationwide, today announced the addition of three new members: Rochester Good Food Store in Rochester, Minn, Company Shops Market in Burlington N.C. and Los Alamos Co-op Market in Los Alamos, N.M. NCGA also welcomes The CO-OP Natural Foods in Sioux Falls, S.D. as part of its new associate program.
“We’re pleased to have these co-ops join NCGA,” said Robynn Shrader, CEO for NCGA. “More than ever, consumers are seeking information about their food and the people who produce it. Food co-ops meet that need by supporting sustainable agriculture and by connecting shoppers to their local growers."
Company Shops Market is a new food co-op projected to open its doors in April 2011. The co-op will feature local, organic and sustainably produced products in addition to a café.
Los Alamos Co-op Market, another new co-op, is expected to open its storefront in March 2011. In addition to offering great food, the co-op will serve its community by fostering the development of northern New Mexican growers and producers and by promoting fairness, participation and empowerment.
With more than 1,400 member-owners, the Rochester Good Food Store has been serving its community since 1975 and has become a mainstay in Rochester by promoting healthy, sustainable and cooperative living.
Springing out of a small South Dakota buyers' club, The CO-OP Natural Foods has thrived for nearly four decades by championing access to organic and local foods for its shoppers and members.
"It's particularly exciting to have this mix of food co-ops with a rich history in their communities and others who will be opening their doors for the first time this year," said Shrader. "We look forward to helping them serve their communities for decades to come."
