Iowa City, Iowa – National Co+op Grocers’ (NCG) ongoing commitment to improving social and environmental well-being has helped it earn its second recertification as a Certified B Corporation.
NCG, which recently received its recertification from B Lab, is among 2,614 B Corps in 60 countries that seek to drive a global movement of people using business as a force for good. All B Corps must meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.
NCG’s commitment to B Corp goes well beyond the certification process. In 2017, NCG’s food co-ops sold more than $86 million of products from Certified B Corporations. Earlier this year, it earned "Best for the World" honors for its excellence in governance. Additionally, NCG is participating in the Certified B Corporation Inclusive Economy Challenge, joining other B Corps to move toward an economy that creates opportunity for all people of all backgrounds and experiences to live with dignity, to support themselves and their families, and to help their communities thrive.
"NCG earned its first B Corp certification in 2012, and it has served as a powerful motivator to continually seek opportunities to use our co-op as a tool to build an inclusive and sustainable economy," said C.E. Pugh, Interim Chief Executive Officer, NCG. "In a business environment filled with companies prioritizing profit over people and planet, we are proud to be a part of a growing community adopting ways of working that are good for everyone."
