NCGA Supports Just Label It Campaign
National Cooperative Grocers Association (NCGA) – a business services cooperative for 122 food co-op grocers nationwide – gives a virtual high five and its full support to the “Just Label It” campaign. Launching today, the campaign petitions the FDA to mandate labeling for all genetically engineered (GE) food sold in the United States.
Just Label It – www.justlabelit.org – is a coalition of more than 350 partner organizations representing the health care community, consumer advocates, farmers, concerned parents, environmentalists, food and farming organizations, retailers, businesses, the faith-based community, and many more concerned with protecting the consumer’s right to know. These organizations have joined together in support of the FDA petition and the mandatory labeling of GE foods.
Just Label It calls on individuals to sign the petition at www.justlabelit.org and seeks to provide a unified, consumer-driven voice to be heard in Washington. Just Label It is also working closely with the first-ever Right 2 Know March taking place from Oct. 1 – Oct. 16, an historic march from New York to the White House in Washington, DC, calling for the labeling of GE foods.
“Co-op grocers strive to provide information so shoppers can make informed choices about the food they eat, and we believe consumers have the right to choose or avoid GE food. It's as simple as that,” said Robynn Shrader, chief executive officer of NCGA. “A 2010 Thomson Reuters PULSE™ Healthcare Survey showed that 93 percent of Americans believe GE foods should be labeled and many other countries such as Japan, Australia, European Union and China already require the labeling."
“Just Label It provides a way for consumers and organizations to share their opinions with the FDA. We encourage everyone who cares about this issue to make their voices heard,” Shrader added. “We, along with our member and associate co-ops, are proud to be a part of this coalition for labeling of GE foods and the consumer's right to know.”
